Call for Expressions of Interest
Board of Directors Vacancy - Small Units Director
Updated on 5/21/2026
The CSU 52 Board of Directors is inviting expressions of interest from Capital Power and Valleyview
Library members to fill the new position of Small Units Director.
This position was created through amendments to the CSU 52 Bylaws passed by the Membership in April
2026. The Small Units Director represents CSU 52 bargaining units of 100 members or less, which
currently includes Capital Power and Valleyview Library.
The Board will make this appointment under Bylaw 4.6, which allows the Board to fill permanent
vacancies until an elected successor takes office. The successful applicant will serve as Small
Units Director from the date of appointment until January 1, 2027, when the first elected Small
Units Director takes office.
This position is compensated by way of a monthly honorarium approved annually by the Membership. For
2026, this amount is $400/month. Leave Letters/Wage Replacement are additionally available for Board
meetings and certain other work as outlined in Policy G-1, Compensation for Meetings and Union
Related Work.
The Small Units Director is a new Board position created to ensure that CSU 52's smaller
bargaining units have direct representation on the Board of Directors. At this time, the
position represents members in the Capital Power and Valleyview
Library bargaining units.
The CSU 52 Bylaws set out the following responsibilities for the Small Units Director:
- represent the interests of all contractual bargaining units they represent, and the
global interests of the Membership;
- arrange and host a Contractual Unit Meeting at least once per year for each unit
they represent;
- solicit interest for and appoint a member from each unit to lead that unit's
Negotiations Committee as required, with assistance from office staff; and
- complete other duties assigned by the Board.
Because this role is similar to the Contractual Unit Director positions, the Small Units
Director is also expected to:
- help connect members with CSU 52;
- identify trends and issues in the units they represent;
- support member communication;
- work with Labour Relations Officers and the Director of Labour Relations; and
- help ensure that the concerns of smaller units are brought forward at the Board
table.
As a member of the Board of Directors, the Small Units Director also participates in the
overall governance and oversight of CSU 52, including attending monthly Board meetings
and helping manage the affairs of the Union between Membership Meetings.
You must be a Member in Good Standing employed in one of the bargaining units represented
by the Small Units Director. For this vacancy, that means you must be a member
of either the Capital Power unit or the Valleyview Library unit.
While the normal qualifications of attendance at Regular Membership Meetings and Unit
Meetings do not apply to mid-term vacancies, the Board will give priority to applicants
who would meet these qualifications.
Additional experience that will be considered an asset includes:
- prior service as a Shop Steward or on CSU 52 committees;
- experience participating in Labour / Management, OH&S, Negotiations, or other
workplace committees;
- demonstrated interest in workplace issues beyond a single immediate work area;
- ability to listen to and represent members from more than one bargaining unit;
- comfort speaking in meetings and facilitating discussion; and
- willingness to communicate regularly with members, Labour Relations Officers, and
the Board.
The Board is looking for someone who can help establish this new role in a thoughtful and
practical way, while ensuring that Capital Power and Valleyview Library members have a
strong voice in CSU 52's governance.
The Small Units Director should expect:
- monthly Board of Directors meetings, plus preparation time. These are typically the
second Tuesday of every month, all day;
- appointment to 2-3 Board sub-committees;
- at least one Contractual Unit Meeting per year with each unit represented by the
position;
- regular communication with members in the Capital Power and Valleyview Library
units;
- follow-up with Labour Relations Officers and the Director of Labour Relations on
trends and issues; and
- participation in relevant Labour / Management, OH&S, Benefits Review, or other
committees where applicable.
Some of this work occurs in the evening and some during regular working hours.
