Call for Expressions of Interest

Edmonton Public Library Contractual Unit Director (Board of Directors)

Posted on 6/29/2026

The CSU 52 Board of Directors is inviting expressions of interest from Edmonton Public Library members to fill a mid-term vacancy for the position of Edmonton Public Library Contractual Unit Director.

The Board will make this appointment under Bylaw 4.6, which allows the Board to fill permanent vacancies until an elected successor takes office. The successful applicant will serve as Edmonton Public Library Contractual Unit Director from the date of appointment until January 1, 2027, when the next elected Director for this position takes office.

This position is compensated by way of a monthly honorarium approved annually by the Membership (for 2026, this amount is $400/month). Leave Letters/Wage Replacement are additionally available for Board meetings and certain other work as outlined in Policy G-1 - Compensation for Meetings and Union Related Work.

Expressions of interest will be accepted until the end of July 12, 2026.

About the Role

The CSU 52 Bylaws set out the following responsibilities for the EPL Contractual Unit Director:

  • Represents the interests of Edmonton Public Library members, and the global interests of the Membership, to the Board and external stakeholders,
  • Arranges and hosts an EPL Unit Meeting at least two times per year, and
  • Leads the EPL Negotiations Committee (during bargaining only).

In addition, the Board has set out further responsibilities for Contractual Unit Directors, including:

  • Supporting and developing Shop Stewards within the Edmonton Public Library unit, in conjunction with the Chief Shop Steward.
  • Providing members and Shop Stewards with advice, counsel and direction.
  • Preparing regular communications for Edmonton Public Library members.
  • Participating in Labour / Management, OH&S, and Benefits Review Committees related to the unit, where applicable.
  • Liaising regularly with Labour Relations Officers and the Director of Labour Relations to identify trends and issues.
  • Maintaining a list of issues for future rounds of bargaining and representing CSU 52 at functions as required.

As a member of the Board of Directors, the Edmonton Public Library Contractual Unit Director also participates in the overall governance and oversight of CSU 52, including attending monthly Board meetings and helping manage the affairs of the Union between Membership Meetings.

Eligibility and Preferred Qualifications

You must be a Member in Good Standing employed by the Edmonton Public Library. While the normal qualifications of attendance at Regular Membership Meetings and Unit Meetings do not apply to mid-term vacancies, the Board will give priority to those applicants who would meet these qualifications.

Additional experience that will be considered an asset includes:

  • Prior service as a Shop Steward or on CSU 52 committees.
  • Experience participating in Labour / Management, OH&S, or Negotiations Committees.
  • Demonstrated interest in workplace issues across the Edmonton Public Library unit, not just at a single worksite.
  • Comfort speaking in meetings and facilitating discussion.

Time Commitment

The Edmonton Public Library Contractual Unit Director should expect:

  • Monthly Board of Directors meetings, plus preparation time. These are typically the second Tuesday of every month, all day.
  • Appointment to 2-3 Board sub-committees (e.g Board Liaison, Policy & Procedures, Finance and Investment, etc.)
  • At least two Contractual Unit Meetings per year with Edmonton Public Library members.
  • Participation in relevant Labour / Management, OH&S, and Benefits Review Committees.

Some of this work occurs in the evening and some during regular working hours.
