Meetings Recap
The Union met with the City on February 13 and 26 to continue non-monetary discussions. We signed-off proposals such as defining disabilities as per the Alberta Human Rights Act and revised language about electronic job postings. We discussed probationary periods, promotions, alternate hiring practices, and workplace culture. These are more contentious issues that typically draw emotional responses. However, we are proud to report that while there were differing positions on these items, the parties participated in respectful, interest-based dialogue, which allowed us to define issues, get a good understanding of each other’s positions, and seek solutions where possible. This approach will serve the parties well as we head into monetary discussions.
Regarding our workplace culture proposal, we had multiple discussions and shared concerns about bullying and harassment, discrimination, toxic workplaces, workloads and staff morale. Management listened to our concerns and shared initiatives that are happening in their departments. The City’s Workplace Restoration group attended during one of our bargaining dates to share the services they provide to assist with conflict resolution in workplaces. We largely brought this issue to the bargaining table to highlight the issues members face and as such, did not add language to the Collective Agreement. We felt good about our conversations and felt that the management participants at the bargaining table heard our concerns.
